Outdoor Recreation
We enjoy many day hikes through Lewis County and the surrounding areas. Boating, fishing, and just being out out on the water is another favorite outdoor recreation. Occassionally we head to one of the Pacific Beaches for clam digging, beach combing, and taking in the sights! This page shows some of our favorite photos from these travels and adventures.
Hiking
East Lewis County is hte access point for portions of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mount St. Helens, with a variety of day hikes and longer trips available. Last year (2007) our oldest son, Josh, headed to Packwood to hike up the Goat Rock Wildreness area with his grandad and family friend. I recall this hiking trip myself, when I was just a kid - my brother, and both our parents hiked up the Goat Rocks, along Lilly Basin, and the breathtaking wildreness. An excellent source of day hike trail information can be found by clicking here. A variety of information on day hikes is available at the Gifford Pinchot National Forest online site. For more information about short day hikes in Lewis County go here.
Camping
Information about camping and hiking opportunities at Mount St. Helens, along with downloadable maps and photos, may be found online at: www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/mshnvm/. Tacoma Power offers three great parks with camping, boating, picnicking and hiking opportunities, all within the Cowlitz River Wildlife Area. The parks are Mayfield Lake, Mossyrock Park and Taidnapam Park. Riffe Lake was created by the Mossyrock Dam, the largest dam in Washington State, and provides camping, fishing and swimming fun. Access Riffe Lake at Mossyrock Park.

Aboard the Sand Man Tug

It was a sunny hot day for cruise around Puget Sound. The water and cool breeze felt good aboard ship. (Pictured below is Teresa and Joey relaxing aboard the Sand Man Tug, and Joey's parents came along too.) We listened to the history of the 1910 Tug Boat - what an interesting story it was too! You can listen to the story and see the tug boat in person (Saturday's) where she moars in Olympia's pier.

Joey and his dad took turns steering the boat from the Captain's Wheel. It looks like they've got a new hobby!
